Walk A Lot, Talk A Lot

Written
1995

George and I walk a lot

       and talk a lot.

We get nowhere with our walk

       and do it over

      again and again.

We get nowhere with our talk

       and say it

      again and again.

Walk a lot,talk a lot,

      not meant to get somewhere

      or to establish final truth.

Once we were younger

       and with our students

      drank a lot.

The beer was nice,

       but we never felt

       a resulting high.

      We taught a lot in

      our classroom in the bar.

We thought of our

       offices and classrooms

      as the oasis where

       students could

        could escape from

        the desert drought.

We went to silly

       department meetings a lot

        and I talked a lot

        and George didn't.

Then we ran a lot

       and rehearsed what

       we should have said.

And nothing changed a lot

       and silliness ruled.

So there you have

      the lot of it.

We walk and we talk and

     don't care where we get.

In the silly meetings

       we got no place because

       my hot breath

        wouldn't melt the iceberg

        but who weeps

for such a mismatch defeat ?

So if you are keeping score,

we did a lot, we do a lot,

       but only in

        that classroom in the bar

       did we accomplish a lot.

Notes
Just a fun take on a long walking and talking relationship that added to our professional years in the Department of Education.
