The Gourmet Menu

Written

 The opportunity for diversity in

      a multicultural society

is like the menu of a great cook.

Each culture, like each dish, is capable

       of standing alone

        to provide a palate treat.

And all  contribute life giving nourishment.

But the taste treat and nourishment

       become even stronger when served

as part of a seven course dinner.

Every course benefits from the others.

A community of learners

      is like these gourmet meals;

      better when variety is provided.

Each student brings different cultural

experience to school and from these

       separate dishes the teacher makes

       a delightful meal.

A major contribution from everyone.

A gourmet cook flourishes with respect

and the use of many foods.

A teacher flourishes with respect

and the use of many cultures

Notes
This poem was inspired by the late Kay Sain. She did more with the idea of diversity in the classroom than any teacher I have known. The more the diversity of the students the greater the teaching possibilities. It is ironic that when she was selected as teacher of the year for Sacramento County her many sterling attributes as a teacher did slightly downplay her remarkable skill at teaching children of diverse cultures. Her skill in that arena was unique.
