Written
1992
Winter's gloom dawns.
Trees stark against the sky.
Cars now frosted landscape.
Erie silence accented
by a distant train whistle.
Birds not to be seen.
Cats, summer jungle beasts,
hide under the stove.
Outside -
cold desolation.
Day one of the New Year.
Frost on the neighbor's roof
becomes an art object.
Grass blades
tipped silver
from icy dew.
A few lights,
Christmas reminders.
Leafless trees
now a sculpture park.
Fires burning.
Smoke mixes
with the aroma of
bacon and coffee.
Slowly we wake
to Start Over Day.
Notes
Obviously written on New Years day before going to the Marr's where I watched the Rose Bowl and ate Cheese fondu and nibbles washed down with white wine. I never made New year's resolutions, but it has always been a time of extended reflection.
