The Ghostly Comedy

Written
1993

Like you I am haunted by a ghost

from whom there is no place to hide.

Every wine bottle has a haunting label.

There is a unwelcome memory

      behind every bookstore shelf.

The past whistles

      my music wherever I go.

This specter,

      as in life,never sleeps.

Each city and each park

has a tombstone for my view.

When I am with you vapors

       sit next to you.

I reach for your hand

and the past clucks me to order.

My friend, we have to get rid

      of our ghosts.

I have a plan.

I have will dress my ghost

      in a clown's costume.

So when I glance at a bookcase

I will see a clown and smile.

At that winery

I have not been able to visit,

      bubble nose will take

      the second glass.

I will wait for a funny

      remark about the vintage.

The parks,

      a playground where children

       visit my big footed one.

My ghost will no longer haunt me.

I have a travelling circus.

Why, right now

the clown sits next to you.

Who is to know why I smile so?

My suggestion to you

      is also very simple.

Your ghost needs to be organized

     in a troop.

Imagine the haunting fear

in a room with your ghost.

Then visualize it there naked.

A pants less ghost

is too funny to be scary.

When you smile,

I will think that I amuse you.

When I laugh you can be sure

      that it's for your humor

and not a clown waiting to be kissed.

We will not stop being haunted,

and make mockery of our ghosts.

And when I become a ghost for you,

be sure that I am allowed at least

       a bath towel.

In return I will leave the funny nose for you.

Notes
This is just a silly poem to entertain a young lady. she was amused 16 years ago and neither of us has read the poem since
