Joe Montana, You Have To Go

Written
1993

 It is time to leave.

You need not move for pride,

rather the thrill of new heroism.

The bench is not for you.

Nor playing

       for one who is hurt.

Second string and second choice,

       no way.

But that is your pride.

Your life here would be rich.

The elder of the team.

Then a coach and the front office.

No, you must move on for others.

And take your ghost with you.

Here you are

      the rookie from Norte Dame,

      the miracle man,

      the Super Bowl Hero.

Each man sees

      you acting out his future.

A reminder of short glory days.

They bear guilt for being young.

Give them a break and leave.

Talking to myself about why Joe Montana should leave the 49ers.
