Your Crazy Play

Written
1999

I love the location in the Italian Alps.

Descriptions of the costumes are exciting.

The dialogue is smoldering smoke,

        but crisp.

I like the story,

       a  masterpiece of writing.

It has humor

        well mixed with your sensitivity.

Some of the suggested casting is marvelous.

But have you cast me in the right role?

Should I not be the kindly old king?

Perhaps the Minister from France.

But a shirtless pirate with glistening chest

      smiling, brave and dashing,

but dead so early in the first act.

Is that the me you want to cast?

Is that the only role for me?

I know it is just a play

      and you need me

      to fill some strange roles.

True, I am what you would have me be.

But a shirtless pirate?

I will bet there is

another part in your play for me?

How about the old gardener

       or the merchant?

Perhaps you could write in a visitor

       from the 21st century.

Ah! I have it;

       the tutor to the prince.

But, anything else would do.

Please not a shirtless pirate.

 I thought you wrote

       the play for me.

Notes
I must have been concerned about some assignment. I do not remember the circumstances and the poem has just been sitting there for a decade.
